Not Cool

February 3rd, 2010 · 1 Comment

The Siren has a fun blog post up about films/actors/directors we’re not supposed to like, or can only like in the privacy of our own homes, or like at the risk of being scorned by people we respect. Uncool stuff. I very much approve.

I have no secret passion for “The Way We Were,” by the way. It’s just that I caught a few minutes of it on TV a few weeks ago and it struck me that if I did feel all warm and fuzzy about TWWW, I sure as hell wouldn’t tell anyone.

Although it has its moments.

Mostly, though, I’d have no problem discussing my guilty pleasures. And I wouldn’t really feel guilty, or care about your choices either. If you really like movies that have stuff getting blowed up and blood and maybe directors with the initials Q.T., I might spent five seconds thinking about you and then move on to watching “Butch Cassidy…” or “Casablanca” for the whateverteenth time, both of which have some problems and both of which I’ll defend as fabulous movies that make me want to wear white tuxedos or holsters or both at the same time (tell me about it; that would be an awesome look).

I also share her affection for Kevin Costner. I have my own for Brad Pitt and Tea Leoni (!); some actors are just watchable.

Not Barbra. But then, I wouldn’t tell you anyway.

I don’t like movies/tv series with violence, especially the souped-up, graphic violence so popular today. I was even relieved to see Leno take the 9pm slot, because it gave me a choice of something other than crime dramas. Since I only have basic cable (won’t pay for premium channels), I watch a lot of PBS and have a Netflix subscription for selective viewing.
